When and how should I tension the chain of the chainsaw?

Last update:
Note: Before you prepare your STIHL product for use, put it into operation, clean, transport, store, maintain, repair, troubleshoot or dispose of it, please read the instruction manual carefully. The instruction manual contains safety instructions and supports you in using your STIHL product in a safe and environmentally friendly manner over a long service life.

During work, the saw chain expands or contracts. The tension of the saw chain changes. During work, the tension of the saw chain must be checked regularly and adjusted. Note that a new saw chain needs to be retensioned more often than one that has been in operation for a long time!

Chainsaw with side chain tensioner (for example with MS 881, MS 500i, MS 650, MS 660, MS 462, MSA 300, MSA 220)
